Hit the Jackpot

Many people are aware of airline carrier’s practice of overselling seats on full planes but few know that hotels commonly embrace this practice as well. Guests who hold reservations and are bumped will almost always receive accommodations and amenities which greatly exceed their quoted room rate.

When a guest is bumped from a hotel due to overselling they must be transferred to a hotel of equal or superior quality. Some four star hotels will even put up guests at superior five star resorts simply to quash any complaints from reaching the corporate office. Additionally the competing hotel will almost always offer relocated guests superior accommodations to attempt to entice guest to become loyal to their brand.

Luxury Hotel Room

As a relocated guest you are usually entitled to the amenities of both properties. This can include but is not limited to use of the pool area, fitness center, concierge and any other services the property might offer.

So how is it possible to get bumped?. First make your reservations to coincide with a big event. This most often includes sporting events, music concerts or national holidays. Second request a particular room or view with your reservation. It will be a lot more difficult to honor your reservation if it includes a special request. And finally check in later in the afternoon. A majority of check-ins occur between 11am to 4pm. The chance of the hotel being oversold greatly increases as the day goes on.

One other important note if you are lucky enough to be bumped, don’t settle for the first offer. Remember being relocated is an extreme inconvenience and consumes your precious vacation time. On top of being upgraded it is not unreasonable to request additional compensation which can include food and beverage credits, activities or airport transportation.

Being bumped from a hotel can be the greatest thing that ever happened to your vacation. Some of the best benefits a hotel can offer you will only be revealed as they are showing you the door. Bookmark and Share
